Sengkang

A river town built from the late 1990s on the site of an old fishing port: LRT loops, a mall on top of the station, a floating wetland and a major hospital on the doorstep.

Sengkang (盛港) is one of Singapore’s younger HDB towns, and it feels it: tall blocks, wide park connectors, young families, and a light rail line that loops past most front doors. It sits between Hougang and Punggol along Sungei Punggol, with Sengkang MRT station (NE16), Compass One and Sengkang Bus Interchange at its centre. Most daily needs, from groceries to a hospital, are a short LRT ride away.

This page is the starting point for our Sengkang guides. Each one shows the month we last checked it.

A fishing port turned new town

Long before the flats, this stretch of Sungei Serangoon was Kangkar, meaning “foot of the port”: a fishing village and landing point surrounded by rubber, pepper and pineapple plots. The name Sengkang, usually translated as “prosperous harbour”, came from Lorong Sengkang, a road off Lorong Buangkok. When HDB began planning the new town in 1994, it chose a seafaring theme, which is why the neighbourhoods are called Rivervale, Compassvale, Anchorvale and Fernvale. The first flats, in Rivervale, were completed in 1997, according to NLB’s Infopedia entry on Sengkang and other histories of the town.

Getting around

The North East Line reached Sengkang in 2003, and the Sengkang LRT opened the same year. From the station, the East Loop serves Compassvale and Rivervale, and the West Loop runs through Anchorvale and Fernvale. Sengkang Bus Interchange sits next to the station. (The old Compassvale Bus Interchange closed when the new Buangkok Bus Interchange opened in December 2024.)

As of September 2026, the West Loop’s inner direction via Cheng Lim is closed until 18 October 2026 for depot and signalling works. The outer direction via Renjong is still running, and shuttle buses leave Sengkang Bus Interchange at weekday peaks. Details are on LTA’s announcement.

Where to start

  • Errands and a meal: Compass One sits above the station with a supermarket, a food court and Sengkang Library.
  • Outdoors: Sengkang Riverside Park has fruit trees, a wetland and a long river bridge, and the floating wetland links it to the sports centre.
  • Swimming and sport: Sengkang Sports Centre on Anchorvale Road has water slides, a gym, a sports hall and a hockey stadium.
  • Health: our guide to the Sengkang polyclinic and hospital covers opening hours, booking and the Emergency Department.

Sengkang food

Sengkang’s food scene is newer than Hougang’s, so it leans on hawker centres built in the last decade and on coffee shops at the foot of the blocks. NEA’s list includes Anchorvale Village Hawker Centre (inside Anchorvale Village) on Anchorvale Road, Fernvale Hawker Centre and Market on Sengkang West Avenue and Buangkok Hawker Centre on Compassvale Bow. Compass One adds a food court and chain restaurants. For older, long-running hawker stalls, many residents still hop one or two MRT stops south to Hougang.

Sengkang addresses are easiest to find by neighbourhood name. “Compassvale” and “Rivervale” blocks are on the East Loop, while “Anchorvale” and “Fernvale” are on the West Loop, so check which loop before you board.

Next door

Buangkok sits on the southern edge of the town, with its own MRT station and a newer mall and bus interchange. Punggol, one stop north, has the waterway and the coast. If you are weighing up where to live, our comparison of living in North-East Singapore sets Sengkang beside Hougang, Punggol and Serangoon.
