Hougang

One of Singapore’s oldest and largest HDB towns: porridge at dawn, a hundred-year-old church, Punggol Park on the doorstep and, from around 2030, a Cross Island Line interchange at the heart of it all.

Hougang (后港) is the kind of heartland town that locals describe by its food first. Queue for porridge before work, pick up fish soup after it, and spend the weekend walking the lake loop at Punggol Park. It is also one of Singapore’s larger towns: about 227,000 people live across roughly 14 square kilometres, from Kovan in the south-west to the edges of Sengkang in the north.

This guide collects everything we have written about Hougang in one place. Each page shows the month we last checked it against official sources.

Hougang at a glance

The town grew out of Teochew farming villages and a Catholic community that built one of Singapore’s oldest churches here in 1901. HDB began developing the new town in 1977, the first neighbourhoods were ready in 1983, and the town centre was finished in the 1990s. Today Hougang has ten planning subzones, including Hougang Central, Kovan, Lorong Ah Soo, Hougang East and Hougang West.

Most residents use two North East Line stations: Kovan (NE13) and Hougang (NE14). From around 2030, Hougang station becomes an interchange with the Cross Island Line, which will run east to Pasir Ris and west towards Ang Mo Kio and Bright Hill.

Where to start

What is changing

Two projects will reshape the town centre over the next few years. The first is the Cross Island Line interchange at Hougang station. The second is the Hougang Central integrated development above it: a new mall, homes and a replacement bus interchange, awarded in a government land sale in late 2025. Hougang Mall itself has also been through an upgrade since 2025. Until works finish, some shops and entrances may move, so check the operators’ websites before a special trip.

Hougang’s avenues are numbered but not in geographic order. Avenue 10 runs past Hougang Mall and up to Punggol Park, while Avenue 1 is near Kovan. Search by block number, not by avenue.

Frequently asked questions

What does the name Hougang mean?

Hougang is the Mandarin form of the Teochew and Hokkien name Au-kang, usually translated as “river end” or “behind the river”. It refers to the area’s position upstream of Sungei Serangoon.

Which MRT stations serve Hougang?

Kovan (NE13) and Hougang (NE14) on the North East Line serve most of the town. Hougang station will also become an interchange with the Cross Island Line, whose first phase is expected around 2030. Defu, a new Cross Island Line station, will serve the southern edge near the industrial park.

Is Hougang a good place to live?

It depends on what you want, but Hougang is known for mature-estate conveniences: established hawker food, a range of schools, Punggol Park, and quick North East Line trains to the city. The main trade-off is that much of the housing stock is older, although newer blocks and private homes are being added.

Where is the town centre?

Hougang Central sits around Hougang MRT station and the bus interchange, next to Hougang Mall on Hougang Avenue 10. A new integrated development with a mall, homes and a new bus interchange is planned above the station.
