Low-rise apartment blocks with rooftop antennas against a blue sky

Lorong Ah Soo is a small, settled HDB estate at the southern tip of Hougang, close to Upper Serangoon Road and a short ride from Kovan. It is made up of 18 blocks, numbered 128 to 145, which HDB completed between 1983 and 1985. Around 1,830 flats sit in mostly 13-storey blocks. The estate is quiet, leafy and well served by food and schools. In everyday speech, “Lorong Ah Soo” often covers the blocks on nearby Hougang Avenue 1 as well.

A Hainanese village before the flats

Before HDB arrived, Lorong Ah Soo was a road lined with the homes of a few hundred Hainanese families. According to the National Heritage Board’s Hougang Heritage Trail, locals called it Hai Lam Hng, meaning “Hainan Garden” in Teochew and Hokkien. It stood out in a district that was mostly Teochew, with Hokkien families along nearby Lorong Lew Lian.

The community built its own institutions. The Serangoon Khiung Jai Co-Villagers Association was registered in 1958 to serve the Hainanese families here. It was a champion of Hainanese opera and moved to its present site at 102 Lorong Ah Soo in 1984. A Hainanese temple and a school, Wah Mong School, also served the village. Farms and plantations once covered much of the surrounding land, and a sculpture in nearby Maplewood Park recalls that rural past.

The name lives on in the market on Hougang Avenue 1, which was rebuilt and renamed to honour the area’s Hainanese roots. You can read more on the NHB Roots page for the association, and in our Hougang heritage guide.

Food and daily needs

Hougang 105 Hainanese Village Centre

Block 105 Hougang Avenue 1 · NEA market and food centre

The estate’s main market and food centre, a short walk from the Lorong Ah Soo blocks. The wet market is on the ground floor and cooked food is upstairs. It opened in the early 1980s and was later rebuilt as a larger, airier complex, taking its current name as a nod to the Hainanese village. It is busiest in the morning, when the market is in full swing. Our Hougang hawker centres guide covers the food in more detail.

For bigger shopping trips, Heartland Mall and Kovan Market and Food Centre are near Kovan MRT, and Hougang Mall is further north at Hougang Central.

Clinics nearby

People searching for a “Lorong Ah Soo clinic” are usually after a GP close to home. Several private GP clinics operate from the shop units under the blocks on Lorong Ah Soo and Hougang Avenue 1. One of the larger ones is Healthway Medical (Lor Ah Soo) at Block 108 Hougang Avenue 1, which takes part in CHAS and Healthier SG and opens in the evenings and at weekends. Hours vary between clinics, so check before you walk over.

For subsidised primary care, the nearest polyclinic is Hougang Polyclinic on Hougang Avenue 4.

Clinics are not emergency departments. For chest pain, breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms or serious injury, call 995.

Schools and parks

  • Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School has both its primary school (298 Lorong Ah Soo) and secondary school (296 Lorong Ah Soo) on the road itself.
  • Xinghua Primary and Yuying Secondary are on Hougang Avenue 1, a short walk away.
  • Maplewood Park, beside the estate, is a small neighbourhood park with play areas. The Hougang parks guide covers bigger green spaces and park connectors.

School traffic on Lorong Ah Soo can be heavy around 7am and early afternoon, when parents drop off and collect at the PLMGS campuses. If you are driving through, plan around those times.

What living here is like

Lorong Ah Soo is a low-key corner of Hougang. There is no mall on the doorstep and no MRT station at the end of the road, so traffic is mostly local. In exchange, residents get a market and food centre within walking distance, schools on the same street, a small park, and blocks set among trees that have had four decades to grow. The main trade-off is the journey to the train, which for most people means a bus ride or a walk of 15 minutes or more.

Getting around

Lorong Ah Soo is between two MRT stations rather than on top of one. Kovan (NE13) is about a kilometre north, and Serangoon (NE12/CC13), which also has the Circle Line and NEX mall, is a similar distance to the south-west. Most residents take a short bus ride to either station. See our Hougang MRT guide for station exits, or the NEX guide if you are heading to Serangoon.
