ActiveSG Gym Guide: Every Public Gym in Singapore’s North-East
Four ActiveSG gyms serve Hougang, Sengkang and Serangoon, all open 7am to 10pm. Here is what each is like, how passes and entry work, the rules for teens, and when to avoid the rush.
Searching for an ActiveSG gym in the North-East? As of September 2026 there are four: Hougang ActiveSG Gym, Sengkang ActiveSG Gym, ActiveSG Gym @ Fernvale Square in Sengkang West, and ActiveSG Gym @ Serangoon Central. All are run by Sport Singapore and open daily from 7am to 10pm. Punggol, Kovan and Buangkok have none of their own yet. Entry works the same way everywhere: buy a pass in the ActiveSG app, then scan in.

1. Hougang ActiveSG Gym
Hougang ActiveSG Gym
Freshly upgraded: Hougang Sport Centre reopened on 30 May 2026. The gym, once known as Hougang ClubFITT, grew from about 570 to 940 square metres in the upgrade and now has HUR strength machines, which suit older users and beginners, alongside the usual cardio and free-weights areas. ActiveSG lists it as an accessible gym, with a hearing loop and an accessible toilet and shower inside. It is a short walk west of Hougang MRT, with the pool, stadium and sports hall next door.
Our Hougang Sport Centre guide covers the rest of the complex.
2. Sengkang ActiveSG Gym
Sengkang ActiveSG Gym
Formerly Sengkang ClubFITT Gym, inside Sengkang Sport Centre by the river, which it shares with Anchorvale Community Club, the feature pool with water slides and the badminton hall. Farmway LRT (SW2) is the nearest stop, and the riverside park connector passes the door, so it suits people who like to jog there and lift. After-work hours are the busiest.
ActiveSG lists a closure of the whole Sengkang Sport Centre on 12 October 2026. More in our Sengkang Sports Centre guide.
3. ActiveSG Gym @ Fernvale Square
ActiveSG Gym @ Fernvale Square
A smaller neighbourhood gym on the Fernvale side of Sengkang, on the same road as The Seletar Mall. It is the handiest option for Fernvale and Sengkang West residents, who would otherwise cross town to Anchorvale. ActiveSG publishes little detail on its equipment, so if you need something specific, such as a squat rack, call the Sengkang Sport Centre line first. Use a journey planner from your block.
4. ActiveSG Gym @ Serangoon Central
ActiveSG Gym @ Serangoon Central
Serangoon’s only ActiveSG gym, in Serangoon Central, the town centre around NEX, and listed by ActiveSG as an inclusive gym. It began as the Silver Circle Gym, a public gym with a rehabilitation focus, and it still has a dance studio inside that hosts classes. NTUC Health runs a senior gym programme here on weekdays, designed by physiotherapists, but as of September 2026 it says the programme is full and not taking new clients. Everyone else can use the gym on a normal pass.
See our NEX guide for food and shopping nearby.
What about Punggol, Kovan and Buangkok?
Punggol has no ActiveSG gym yet. A gym and fitness studios are part of Punggol Regional Sport Centre on Sentul Crescent, which MCCY said in 2024 would open in 2026. As of September 2026 it does not appear on ActiveSG’s gym list, so treat the opening date as unconfirmed. Until then, Punggol residents mostly use Sengkang or Fernvale Square. Kovan residents are between Hougang and Serangoon Central, and Buangkok is one MRT stop from Hougang. Just outside the area, ActiveSG also runs gyms at Ang Mo Kio Community Centre, ActiveSG Sport Park @ Teck Ghee and Bishan.
How passes, payment and entry work
- Sign up. Get the ActiveSG app or use the MyActiveSG+ website and log in with Singpass. Basic membership is free.
- Choose a pass. A single entry covers one visit, with no re-entry. MyActiveGYM plans give unlimited entry to all ActiveSG gyms for 1, 6 or 12 months, as a peak plan (any time) or an off-peak plan (weekdays until 4pm, not public holidays).
- Check the rates. Citizens and PRs pay less than other users, and there are lower rates for students (12–17) and seniors (55 and over). See ActiveSG’s individual rates page for current prices.
- Scan in at the gym entrance with the app.
Rules for teens and first-timers
- Minimum age 12. ActiveSG’s gym rules say children under 12 are not allowed in, for safety.
- Under-15s: a parent links the child to their own MyActiveSG+ account and buys the pass from there.
- New to the gym? ActiveSG recommends asking the fitness instructor on duty for an orientation, and checking with a doctor before high-intensity training.
- Dress code: proper gym wear, no bare bodies, and covered rubber-soled shoes. Slippers and bare feet are not allowed.
- Etiquette: bring a towel, wipe equipment after use, rack your weights, and keep to 30 minutes on cardio machines when others are waiting. Only resealable water bottles are allowed in.
Peak times and how to avoid them
ActiveSG’s own pricing tells you when gyms are busy: off-peak plans stop at 4pm on weekdays. Expect the heaviest crowds after work on weekdays and at weekends. ActiveSG may briefly hold people at the door when a gym is too full. Before you leave home, check live numbers with the “Check Gym Capacity” link on each ActiveSG gym page.
If Sengkang looks packed on the capacity page after work, check Fernvale Square too. Both are run by Sengkang Sport Centre, and a MyActiveGYM plan covers either.
For a swim after your workout, see our guide to North-East swimming pools, which covers closure days at Hougang, Sengkang and Serangoon.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the nearest ActiveSG gym in Punggol?
As of September 2026 Punggol has no ActiveSG gym open. A gym is part of the planned Punggol Regional Sport Centre. Until it opens, the nearest are Sengkang ActiveSG Gym at 57 Anchorvale Road and the gym at Fernvale Square.
What are ActiveSG gym opening hours?
All four North-East ActiveSG gyms list the same hours: daily from 7am to 10pm. Check the ActiveSG closure page before you go, as gyms occasionally close for maintenance or events.
Can a 13-year-old use an ActiveSG gym?
Yes. ActiveSG’s rules bar children under 12 from its gyms, and users aged 12 to 17 pay student rates. For children under 15, a parent links the child to their own MyActiveSG+ account and buys the pass from there.
How do I pay for an ActiveSG gym?
Buy a single-entry pass or a MyActiveGYM monthly plan in the ActiveSG app or website, which uses Singpass, then scan in at the gym. Rates are lower for citizens and PRs, students and seniors.
When is an ActiveSG gym least crowded?
Weekday mornings and early afternoons are usually the calmest, which is why off-peak passes cover weekdays until 4pm. After-work evenings and weekends are busiest. ActiveSG shows live gym capacity online.
